Day 2 Part 2: The bathroom from Hell that was Heaven sent

We hit the gift shop and I got these super cool, red, triangle earrings. The lady was very sweet.

When we were finished with the woods, we began the long walk back to the car. Mom and I had to walk on the side of the road and people were zipping by headed down this mountain trail. Woah. Then we started heading down the mountains ourselves. A friend suggested we check out Sausalito. We attempted to find the library but instead headed to the antique shop. They had a couple of amazing typewriters that I definitely wanted to take home. The art gallery chick next door was really cool, but I felt pretty sick from the winding road down the mountain. After picking up some ginger ale at a cute little market, we started the trip back home.

This is the part of the horror movie where the music gets really scary and the people in the scene have no idea what's going to happen but you the viewer know exactly what's going to happen so you cover your face with your hair. Let's proceed.

We wound around even more corners in some neighborhood and I liked getting to see the houses but I was sort of done. We were following the GPS the best we could, but it kept confusing me. Getting out of the neighborhood was just fine, but then at some fated stop light, we took a left instead of a right. That was it. That was the moment it all was flushed down the toilet.

Okay, it didn't start out so bad. We went over the Golden Gate bridge. That was cool! Also, I sang the Full House theme song. No regrets.

The traffic started getting rough. Sooner than we knew, we were in the heart of San Francisco. That was cool for a while, we could see the sailboats which was neat. There's some kind of regatta gala going on this weekend. Then we were in Little Italy. Then we were in a very sketchy neighborhood. We passed people in masks protesting the church of scientology. Then, we were stuck. That's right. Stuck. Absolutely no one was getting through lights. Maybe half a car. We were moving a little and then we stopped moving for sure. And we both had to pee. At one point we parked on the side of the road and I jumped out to go into a business to pee. Guess what, they were all closed. All of them, including Walgreens. It was like 6:30pm on a Saturday! What. The. Hootie. And no one would let us into lanes so we could get to our place to turn. It. Was. Awful. It's different being in traffic in a strange city, with a car you're unfamiliar with, trying to find your way around when your GPS is on the fritz. It was out of control.

After doing lots of illegal things to get ourselves right with the lanes of traffic, we knew we were headed the right direction for the highway. But we still needed a bathroom! There it was: a gas station on the right side of the street. Yes, we were in the leftist lane. Yes, we did stop traffic a little to get over. Oh well. We pulled up next to the pump and I saw a sign that said "pay attendant at window". was this one of those spots with no inside place to be? What then? We pulled on the door anyway and in a very small hallway that connected to an auto repair shop, there was a bathroom. YES! I opened the door and there it was: the bathroom from Hell. There were words scratched into the seat of the toilet and ridiculous markings and stains on the back of the door. It was the least I have ever cared about a dirty place to pee. As soon as I was finished, I switched spots with my mom and we were good to go. We got back in the car and made a U-turn instead of taking yet another detour.

When we were finally home, I was so stressed out it took forever to decompress. Here are some lessons I learned from this day of insanity: when you see a bathroom that looks like it may have the potential to be clean, use it, especially if you're somewhere you are unfamiliar with. Having a good, old fashioned map in your car isn't a bad idea. Don't let your GPS "recalculate" a route for you if you are capable of getting back to where you made your mistake and fixing it because you never know where it might take you. Finally, not all things are open on a Saturday night in San Francisco. Seriously.

Day 2 Part 1

Mom and I both slept in to midmorning. When we were on our way to Muir Woods, we got to be on some really cool bridges. Sometimes they freak me out, but that comes later.

We were headed to the woods when out of the blue, I saw it. The most beautiful, Californian opportunity: a farmer's market. A very legitimate one at that.

Fresh plums, peaches, apples, grapes, pears, lemons, and other fruits. All organic and sold by the people who picked them. Okay I made that last thing up but it's possible. Also there were some majorly fresh fish and flowers. They had a troubadour, kids craft options, face painting, and pony rides. So cute!

We also found a Starbucks in the set of shops where the market was. Skinny vanilla latte is my jam, ma'am. Then we set out for the woods for real!

The Muir Woods were so beautiful. We had to park far away, but we anticipated that. The woods were amazing! Wow! More of the photos are on my actual camera so I'll put them up on my Facebook and put some on the blog. Huge Huge Huge trees. And that's only part of the day. From there, it's only down hill. Bleh. That part of the day is its own beast and deserves its own post.

Day one

A lot of day one was spent on a plane. I ate the cow poop chocolate treats in the airport. How funny :)
Our plane stopped Twice and let on new passengers but we were "flying through" to the final destination. I sat next to a 13 year old girl who switched between apps on her iPad faster than anyone I've ever seen. She was quiet and her mom, who we met at the gate, was super sweet. At our next stop, a very blonde, surfer dude sat next to me. We talked a lot of the flight and he is a Christian. We shared music taste and how life is, what's up next in life, and how his career in the movie biz is looking. What a sweet guy! Isn't it wonderful to find other Christians in random spots and chat with them? It's just another reminder that we, you and me, are not alone in our walk with the Lord.
The flight attendants were also very kind and told us that we should rent our car online before we get to the counter because it's cheaper. Great tip! So we used southwest.com and got a car booked.
Then after all the flying, we got to OAK and found our way to the counter. Boy, did that lady try to rip us off. Also, she said my mom's license was expired but in IL we do things differently. Something about a sticker because she didn't have any incidents with her license. You don't have to wait in line at the DMV, bing, bang, boom you're good to go. Ms Car Rental tried to sell us a ton of things and I know that's her job but I was proud of us for being smart ladies. Boom.
Our rental car is schweet: white Mustang. When we finally found the house, there were 3 super gross banana slugs waiting to greet us. Eww. But the yellow roses were also there to greet us- yay! It was like 1:30am our time when we finally got into bed with the airplane smell showered away.
That was day 1 but let me tell you, day 2 was way crazier! Get excited.

This is only a test

Turns out, I don't want to lug around my laptop and charger. I previously had not used the Blogger app for iPhones because it has terrible reviews and a friend of mine only uses it in a pinch. Well, packing is making this is a pinch. I'll be using the app while I'm in California and hopefully posting photos from here, otherwise I'll do a photo dump at the tail end of the trip.
Happy blogging!

This week at home

AHHH.
These past few days have been pretty awesome.
I sat in waiting rooms like it was my J-O-B. That sounds boring, but it means I was knocking down appointments and getting things done.
I had to go to the dentist twice this week. That was not awesome.
We have been going to the same dentist since I was a kid. I've never seen another dentist. Maybe in passing or something, but never been in their office. Anyway, because our dentist is a nice guy, I'm not one who typically dreads the dentist. Boy, was I wrong. This time they flossed my teeth and by flossed my teeth, I mean made me bleed like my mouth has never bled before.
I do not floss. One day, maybe, I'll be on my death bed and say "If only I had flossed more!" but that's just tough cookies. I know, I know, it gets easier the more you do it, it's really good for you, you wouldn't bleed as much if you did it all the time. It's yucky, and time consuming, and I don't particularly enjoy bleeding from the mouth in the morning.
Then the dentist told me I had to come back because I had not one but two cavities. Dang it.

I was back there at 7 AM on Thursday. Yuck. They gave me Novocain, which I had never experienced before. 2 shots of that stuff in my gums and I was a whole different person. Or, at least that quadrant of my mouth was. It was kind of funny to me that I couldn't move that part of my face. Here are some of the least attractive photos of my to ever grace the Internet. My face was really swollen and flushed the rest of the day, but I'm not really having sensitivity to cold like he said I might.
I was trying to smile.

My best fishy face.
All the days have kind of blended together, but one day this week I had lunch with my dad at BWW which was a lot of fun. I like hanging out with him.
I had coffee with Chelsea one morning, had Storm & Michael over for pizza, got 1/2 price AZ tea with Kate from Walgreens, and loved on the doggie dog. Also, I got my hair did :)

It turned out GREAT. I was really happy with the color and the cut. The girl who cuts my hair was quicker than usual, which is how I prefer it.

I worked with Storm & Michael this summer at camp and they both had to leave a little early so they could get to school. Lucky for me, their campus is like 10 minutes from my house! We had pizza and my first ever attempt at homemade guacamole. Also, by homemade I mean I saw the packet at Jewel with directions on the back, grabbed 2 avocados and followed directions. It was really easy and really tasty.

I took Maxi for a walk this morning and this really sweet girl who was going for a walk loved him. But come on, who doesn't. That dog is adorable.
Yesterday, I went for a run on the treadmill while watching the women's soccer gold medal match on tv. We recorded it and while I know the results, I still like to watch the game. I yelled at the TV a LOT and sort of scared Max. Oops, sorry pup. I love the game! It's nice to know what you're talking about while yelling at sports. If I am intensely focused on a football or basketball, I usually can tell why people are yelling, the appropriate words to yell (Aw yeah! or Oh NO! Terrible call!) and so on. With soccer, I played long enough that I understand the terms, what needs to happen, who should be where, what a great move is and what isn't, etc.

Here are some photos of the women's soccer team because it feels weird to have a post with 4 photos of my face and no photos of anything else.

Of course, there's been packing going on this week like crazy. I'm not done (will I ever be?) and we leave for California pretty soon. Gotta find a good playlist!

I'm hoping to update from California, but you never know with unfamiliar wifi. Enjoy your weekend!

Weekend Nuttiness

Whenever I travel and see funny things, I (nearly) instantly think, "I have to remember that for my blog!"
It's better if I can get a picture, but typically these things occur when I am driving. Alas, you will have to rely on my words to paint the picture for you.

As I am attempting to stay focused and write this post, my Grooveshark account is playing Vitamin String Quartet. Have you ever heard of them? They're fantastic. The orchestra covers pop songs. A guy I staffed with this summer would play a song and see how long it took us to figure out what it was. You get all the fun of the pop songs you hate to love, plus the classy feeling of listening to 'classical' music, minus the icky feeling from the sometimes gross lyrics. Oh, and Grooveshark is free. What's not to love?

Right as the trip started, I went to the corner store (the gas station nearest camp) and bought a soda. I was tired from cleaning and in want of some caffeine. The lady at the counter was training on the job and I told her she was doing great. That's tough, especially because people are in a hurry.

I stopped at the scenic overpass we would always stop by when I was a kid going up to camp. Hurrah for nostalgia. In the far left photo, you can see the funny "no dumping" sign. Very mature.

The trip to my grandparents house was relatively uneventful, which is just how I like it. It was nice to be in the car alone for a while, with music that didn't have to be catered to anyone else. Sometimes I get what I affectionately refer to as "music ADD" and switch to the next song a minute in. Apparently, that's pretty annoying. When I drive alone, nobody seems to complain.

Two of my great aunts (Grandpa's sisters) were visiting when I showed up. One of them is progressing further into the stages of Alzheimer's, and that's tough. I'm glad I got to see both of them because I never know when I'll get to see them again.

My grandparents treated me to pizza (T-Jo's!) which was awesome. I went to bed early, like 8:00pm. I felt like a party pooper but my Grandma reminded me that I was yawning every 30 seconds and that it probably wouldn't hurt to get a little extra sleep.

On Saturday morning, I had the best blackberry jam that the neighbors gave to my grandparents. Wow. I would definitely add that to the "you can only eat three foods for the rest of your life" list next time the topic comes up. Then I went on a walk with my grandpa and we saw a bunch of yard sales and one ugly cat. We had Olive Garden for lunch and we had the waiter who was on his own for the first time. He was nervous, and checked in a few too many times, and forgot my tea at first, but overall he did really well. Poor guy. Good thing we are nice people :)

The drive home was longer and included more idiots than my first drive, imagine that. My mom put up "Welcome Home" banners and balloons. Thanks, Mom!

The village is doing some kind of sidewalk work, so Mom worked with what she had.
Our beautiful new garage door! My dad got a gnarly scar putting it up.
He also put of these gorgeous lanterns. Yay for a pretty house.

Saturday was a night full of laundry, painting my nails for the first time all summer, a shower that did not require shower shoes, more pizza, catching up with my mom (Dad was at work), and watching Gilmore Girls. My kind of night!

I went to church this morning with Mom and afterwards reunited with my old pal, grande skinny vanilla latte from Starbucks. So good.

I plan to do some organizing and more catching up this week. My room is a mess and the back couch is covered in clean laundry! I'm bagging up things for charity as I go along. I have way too much!

The Not So Beginning of the End

Today is Monday. Campers are here! This rental group brings their own counselors which is great, but also strange. A bunch of people are here at camp, but we are not really in charge of them, but we sometimes see and interact with them. We mostly serve them food, do their dishes, and clean their bathrooms, and smile at them in passing.

Last week we had a rental group and then there was a group here this weekend, which meant major cleaning turn around. Blegh.

This week is a lot of tying the loose ends of summer administration. It will be strange to "pack up my desk." Some staffers have already left, and more will be leaving as the week rolls onward. It seems like very few of us will be staying through Friday. We do a major, deep, end of the summer clean on Friday. That list is intimidating. But tomorrow (and the next day) have their own worries. It feels like we have been ending for a long time.

Two of the staff members who left already left early to go to school, which happens to be very near my house. Next week, I plan to have them over for dinner and it will be grand.
I'm feeling weird about leaving. I'm ready to go and I'm nervous that means not fully experiencing the goodbyes. I am too far into anticipating the next three weeks of life.

This week: Work through Friday (night?)

This Friday: Drive to Grandpa and Grandma's (2 and a half hours)

Saturday: hang with grandparents a little, drive back to the home front (4 and a half hours)

Sunday-->Friday: Staying home, lots of appointments, lots of spending time with close friends, lots of cuddling with my dog, lots of processing of camp, lots of spending time with parents. I'm telling you, these few days are going to rock.

Friday: Fly out to San Francisco (3 hours, 42 minutes + all that time at the airport security, sitting at gate, sitting on the runway, etc). WHAT. This is where the story gets crazy. My mom and I are going to visit the new home of my sister and her husband. Who knew that was going to happen any time soon? I'm so excited to see her and see the place where she works, the city where she lives, etc.

Saturday & Sunday: See the Redwood Forest!!! I have been dying  to see the redwoods for years. I will probably cry. I will freak out if I think about it anymore.

Monday-->Wednesday: Explore San Fran as I'm prone to call it. I found out the aquarium is insanely close to our hotel, so that's definitely on my list of things to see. If you have recommendations of cool things to do there, let me know in a comment!

Wednesday: Fly back (3 hours, 42 minutes + all that time at the airport security, sitting at gate, sitting on the runway, etc). Some time to rest and recoup.

Thursday, Friday: Packing, getting ready for school, more time with friends.

Saturday: Drive to school (4 hours, 20 minutes) and move in! 3rd floor again, but this building has an elevator.

Sunday: Settle in a little at school, mentally prepare myself for school, run to Walmart for anything I forgot.

Monday: Classes start!!

So for anybody who's still with me, that's insane. These next few weeks will be a crazy adventure.
Wow. Here we go.

I wouldn't say I'm a homebody, but

This summer has been tough.
God has blessed my family with good, reliable cars that meant my parents could and did visit me this summer. My sister visited me at camp too! God's timing is perfect and He definitely worked that out. My brother in law could not make it to camp, but half the equation isn't bad.

My mom came to camp the week of June 24th and volunteered in the kitchen for that week. My cousin was a camper that week so I got to see him throughout the week. My sister, Kayla, was in the process of moving and had some time that week. Instead of more prepping for moving, she drove all the way to camp and sweated to the oldies in the kitchen with my mom. That is some kinda family love right there. At the end of that camper week, I was baptized and my dad drove up to see that and be apart of the ceremony. My grandparents, aunt, two uncles, and other little cousin came as well as a close family friend. WOW! God has blessed me with those who love me, those who spend time, money, and energy to be apart of a very special day in my life.

Then the 21st of July, my dad came to camp and we went to Minnesota for a family Christmas in July. We ate at a sketchy diner, played bocce ball with extended family, and chatted during the car ride. Missing staff outings and jokes on the weekends is weird but time with my dad is so much better than being apart of that.

All of this to say, I have seen my family a lot this summer for being like 7 hours from home. And, despite all of that, I am pretty homesick right now. I just want to sit at home with my family! I want to sit with my mom and get our nails done or stress out about the women's Olympic soccer team playing Japan tonight with my dad. I'm pretty sad I can't watch that with him tonight. I miss my dog and my own room and being settled. I have moved around to cabins less than other people this summer but more than I am used to moving around. I'm only home for two weeks before I go back to school, and I'm not loving the idea of such a quick transition.

This summer has been wonderful and continues to be a lot of fun. These are just the realities of a summer job away from home.

Rental Weeks

On Friday, our senior high campers went home. That means we are done with residential campers for the summer. That also means there are 2 weeks left of summer.
WOAH.
The Plattville church is here now (we just had dinner with them) so that's a little different. We typically don't have family units here which is exactly what this week is.
There are lots of "end of summer" BIG projects I am working on this week which is great. I love that kind of stuff. It's nice too because I won't be able to tune out before we are really done. I have to push through to the end. Last week was a strange week all around in the office, so I'm trying to remember to have fun and enjoy what time we have left at camp.
We have an exciting game planned for tonight that involves water balloons and markers, so I'm going to prepare myself.
